Where are they now? This page is dedicated to some of the apparatus that once served the Swissvale Volunteer Fire Department or the Borough of Swissvale Fire Department. Some of the equipment pictured is still in service elsewhere, and some is in the hands of collectors. More pictures and information will be added as it becomes available. If you have pictures or information to share, please forward it to us by clicking here
Old and new: This photograph taken July 4, 1974 at the Swissvale Municipal building shows a Maxim pumper, and at the time a brand new Ward Lafrance pumper. The Maxim pumper was "sold" to the volunteer fire department by the Borough of Swissvale for $1. The Maxim pumper was the first pumping engine ever owned by the volunteer fire department. The New Ward Lafrance "Engine 1" served the career fire department until 1989.
1948 Mack squad: Squad 2 as it was known probably had the most personality of any of our apparatus. Labeled a "squad car", this monster was used as a hose tender, and personnel carrier. It served the SVFD loyally until the late 1980's, when it was donated to the Allegheny County Fire Academy. It sat quietly for a few years at the academy, and then one day it simply "vanished"..maybe to the great firehouse in the sky??.
Ford squad: This Ford squad truck, known as "Squad 1" carried various equipment and manpower to emergency scenes until the early 1980's. It was also used to carry some of the first pieces of vehicle rescue equipment ever used in the borough.
GMC squad: This GMC squad replaced the Ford pictured above. It was used as a salvage and support unit. It served the SVFD until 1990.
